Your Google Business Profile is either making you money or costing you customers. Here are the 10 biggest mistakes I see โ and exactly how to fix each one.
1. Wrong Business Hours
Your profile says you're open. A customer drives over. You're closed. They go to your competitor and leave you a 1-star review on the way.
Fix it: Update your hours every time your schedule changes. Set Special Hours for holidays in advance โ don't let customers be surprised.
2. No Photos (Or Terrible Photos)
Zero photos signals "Is this place even real?" Blurry phone photos from 2015 signals "Do they care about anything?"
Fix it: Add 10+ high-quality photos showing your space, your team, and your work. Update monthly. If photography isn't your thing, hire a local photographer โ it pays for itself quickly.
3. Ignoring Reviews
You've got 15 reviews. You've responded to zero. That tells every future customer you don't care about feedback โ or about your customers once the job is done.
Fix it: Respond to every review. Thank happy customers by name. Address complaints professionally, and offer to resolve issues offline.
4. Keyword-Stuffed Business Name
"Joe's Plumbing | 24/7 Emergency Licensed Insured Spartanburg SC" โ Google will flag or suspend your listing for this. And customers find it off-putting.
Fix it: Use your actual business name. That's it. No keywords, no taglines.
5. Wrong Primary Category
You're a plumber but your primary category is "Contractor." Google doesn't know precisely when to surface you, so you miss the high-intent searches that matter most.
Fix it: Choose the most specific category that matches your main service. "Plumber" not "Home Services." Add secondary categories for everything else.
6. Vague Business Description
"We provide quality service to meet your needs with excellence." Cool. So does every other business on the list.
Fix it: Be specific about what you do, who you serve, and why someone should choose you. Mention your location, how long you've been in business, a warranty, a differentiator.
7. Not Using Google Posts
Posts appear prominently on your profile and signal to Google that your business is active. If you haven't posted in months, your profile looks dormant โ even if your business is thriving.
Fix it: Post at least once per week. Share updates, offers, completed projects, or tips. Standard posts stay live for 7 days, so consistency is the game.
8. No Cover Photo
The banner image at the top of your profile is the first visual impression you make. Leaving it blank โ or letting Google auto-populate it with a random street view โ wastes that opportunity entirely.
Fix it: Add a professional cover photo that shows your storefront, your team, or your best work. Make it 1080ร608 pixels for best results.
9. Incomplete Service Listings
You offer 12 different services. Your GBP lists 2. Customers don't know you can help them with the other 10 things they need โ and neither does Google.
Fix it: List every service you offer. Add clear descriptions for each. Include pricing where applicable. This directly improves your relevance signals for a wider range of searches.
10. Not Monitoring Q&A
Anyone โ customers, competitors, or random strangers โ can post questions on your GBP. If you're not monitoring this section, misleading or damaging information can sit on your profile indefinitely.
Fix it: Check your Q&A section at least weekly. Answer every question professionally. Proactively seed common questions you hear in real life so customers can self-serve.
Most of these take 15 minutes to fix. Audit your profile today and check each one off the list. Every mistake you leave in place is a customer you're handing to a competitor.
